What do they mean? They mean that during the contraction, the placenta was squeezed with enough pressure that the blood supply to the baby was cut off or severely decreased. They are not cord compression, and they aren’t head compression, they are a sign that the baby’s brain was actually deoxygenated for a long enough period of time that it affected the heart and it actually slowed down due to lack of oxygen to the brain. Clearly, this is not a good thing. This is reason for a C-section and clearly, you are not able to “hear” this very subtle pattern with a Doppler. In fact, by the time the contraction has ended, you are not even going to be listening anymore and you certainly will not pick up a subtle decel with your ear alone. Late decels of fetal heart tones are the only decelerations that indicate fetal distress. Prolonged late decels over several hours of labor can cause severe brain damage.
What are late decels?
• Not a consistently lowered heart rate.
• Not a deep and dramatic decrease that happens randomly.
• Not a deep, mirroring of the contraction.
Fetal distress is indicated when the fetal heart tones decrease in a subtle manner following or near the end of the contraction. Late decels are threatening, the other two types are not.
A summarized list of what has been covered:
1. External monitoring devices cannot detect the strength of a uterine contraction. It senses the tension in the skin and registers that and that alone.
2. You can stimulate uterine contractions in your bitch simply by attaching the fetal monitor belt. They can last as long as the belt is in contact with the nipples, or can go away quickly. These contractions are not laboring contractions. You caused them yourself by attaching the belt over the nipples. This is one more reason why the technology is not appropriate for canines.
3. Monitoring devices are for a human woman with one uterus, one fetus and no nipples on her abdomen. (If a woman has nipples on her abdomen, she has many issues other than pregnancy anyhow.)
4. A Doppler can only give you a current fetal heart rate. It is impossible to detect fetal distress with a Doppler.
5. Even professionals often mistake mom’s heart rate for baby’s when using a Doppler.
6. A consistently lower heart rate, as long as it is reactive, is not a sign of anything but a lower heart rate.
7. You know now what a variable decel is. You know what causes it and you know it is benign most of the time for a human and always for a canine.
8. You know what an early decel is. You know what causes it and you know it is benign.
9. You know what a late decel is. You know it can well be deadly and you know why: Deprive the brain of oxygen often enough and long enough and you will end up with brain damage.
10. You have, at least, been told the limitations of using human fetal monitors on bitches.
